From Pizza Hut Delivery to a Garage Sewing Machine
In 2012, Ben Francis hand-sewed workout vests in his parents' garage in Birmingham while delivering pizzas for Pizza Hut at night.
He couldn't afford to run television advertisements or pay Nike-level celebrity athlete endorsements.
Instead, he looked at YouTube. Fitness creators like Lex Griffin and Matt Ogus had dedicated followings of gym-goers who trusted their every recommendation.
The Original Influencer Gifting Playbook
Gymshark did something revolutionary for the time:
- They didn't send cold contracts demanding sponsored videos.
- They simply sent free, beautifully tailored athletic tracksuits with a handwritten note: "We love your content; hope you like the fit."
Creators wore the gear in their daily workout vlogs because they genuinely loved how it contoured their physique.
When Gymshark booked a booth at the 2013 BodyPower fitness expo, thousands of fans mobbed the stand to meet the creators, selling out their entire inventory in minutes.
