The Telco Cartel in Francophone Africa

Across Senegal, Mali, and Côte d'Ivoire, mobile network operators enjoyed an entrenched monopoly. Orange Money charged users up to 7% simply to cash out their hard-earned money.

Because consumers had no reliable alternative, small business owners accepted these predatory deductions as an inescapable cost of life.

Then Drew Durbin and Lincoln Quirk (founders of Sendwave) launched Wave with a singular declaration: Transfers are free, bill payments are free, and cash-outs cost a flat 1%.

The Penguin QR Card: Serving Non-Smartphone Users

While competitors required smartphone app downloads or clunky 15-digit USSD menus, Wave issued free physical plastic cards with a unique QR code (featuring their blue penguin logo).

A street vendor or market grandmother simply tapped the QR card against an agent's terminal, typed a 4-digit PIN, and received cash in 5 seconds flat.

By 2022, Wave was processing the majority of mobile money transactions in Senegal, forcing Orange to cut its own fees by 80% to survive.
